The plot of the movie turns on this critical scene where Chief Bromden speaks for the first time.

McMurphy meets Chief Bromden, a Native American Indian, in the hospital.  Bromden does not speak for most of the story.  Everyone assumes he cannot hear or understand what is happening to him.

Nicholson plays Randle P. McMurphy.  He pretends he needs psychiatric treatment to stay in the hospital and avoid prison for a crime he committed.
