This period in the history of baseball in the United States was particularly significant for that generation who came of age in the Depression, fought a World War, and then settled down in the 1950's to work and raise a family.  Baseball was America's pastime.  And it's heroes were American heroes.  They touched many lives in deeply personal ways.
