Sometimes the light was not enough to protect the ships and their crews. This is the famous wreck of the Annie C. Maguire, which ran aground in the snow on Christmas Eve, 1886.

The captain, his wife and son, and 13 crew members were rescued by the keeper, Joshua Strout.

Tourists and fair weather sailors may find it hard to imagine that seamen and lighthouse keepers were working year round, often in weather like this.

And the worse the weather got, the more important the light became.

The lighthouse was also a popular subject of painters. This is Owls Head Lighthouse, built in 1825.
